Pentagon: attack launched in Somalia to go after a terrorist suspect

PENTAGON (AP) - The Pentagon says it will continue to pursue terrorist activities wherever officials may find them.

The comments after announcing a U.S. airstrike that targeted a suspected al-Qaida terrorist in southern Somalia. Pentagon officials aren't saying whether the targeted individual was hit or whether there were any other casualties. But they are saying the attack was in accordance with standard U.S. policy.

One military official says the target was believed to be staying in a building regularly used by terror suspects.

The White House says the action was taken to go after "al-Qaida and al-Qaida terrorists," suggesting that it may have been designed to hit more than one person.

Police in Somalia says three missiles hit a town four miles from the Kenya border. They say one home was destroyed and eight people were seriously injured.
