Nairobi, 30 October 2008) - It is with great sadness that the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Mark Bowden, confirms the death of two staff members in the car bomb attack of the UNDP compound yesterday, 29 October 2008.
Mr. Mohammed Geele was a Local Security Advisor who had worked for the UN for five years. He is survived by his wife and five children. Mr. Sayid Hashi, from Borama, Somaliland, had been a driver for the UN Office for Project Services since 1997 and leaves behind a wife and three sons. more

A prominent local cleric was detained as part of the investigation into the twin explosions, which wounded six members of the intelligence service in addition to killing the two bombers, witnesses said"The attackers were trained by Al-Qaeda, according to the evidence we have collected, but investigations are still under way," Puntland presidential advisor Bile Mohamoud Qabowsade told AFP.Simultaneous triple suicide car bombings in Hargeysa, the capital of the neighbouring breakaway region of Somaliland, killed 20 people in addition to the bombers and wounded at least 30, medical sources and officials said.Witnesses told AFP that police arrested prominent cleric Sheikh Mohamed Ismail as part of the ongoing probe."Police raided Sheikh Mohamed’s house outside Bosasso and arrested him. I do not know whether others were also detained but I saw the sheikh onboard a police truck," said Abdulaziz Mohamed Abdurahman, a neighbour and local elder.The Puntland authorities deployed extra security forces across the territory, with security particularly tight in Bosasso."A sufficient number of policemen and other security forces have been deployed all over the region, particularly in Bosasso in order to check the movement of vehicles," police official told AFP.
