15 civilians and 2 soldiers die in gunbattle in Somali capital

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Police and witnesses say at least 17 people have been killed in a gunbattle in the Somali capital. Mogadishu residents say Friday's two-hour clash erupted when insurgents attacked the house of a local government official. Witness Dahir Mohamed says he counted 15 bodies of young men on the street after the fight was over. It is not clear if the dead are civilians or insurgents. Officer Abdinur Salad says two soldiers were also killed in the clash. He says another six soldiers were wounded. somalia has not had an effective government for 17 years.
