Captain fights off attack by pirates

Defiant Somali pirates await EU navy force
MOGADISHU (AFP) - Somali pirates were undeterred Saturday as a new European Union naval forces readied to launch an operation aimed at curbing relentless attacks that have rattled world maritime trade.
The EU's anti-piracy drive, dubbed Atalanta, was to formally kick off on Monday, increasing the military presence in the Gulf of Aden, which has in recent months become the world's most dangerous stretch of water.

EU to begin Somali pirate patrols

European Union warships and aircraft are due to start anti-piracy patrols off the Somali coast.
Six ships and three surveillance planes from at least eight EU countries, including the UK, France and Germany, will escort aid and merchant ships. The area, including one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, the Gulf of Aden, has seen almost 100 pirate attacks this year.
