China navy mission makes neighbours nervous

GUANGZHOU: A Chinese navy anti-piracy task force set sail for Africa yesterday in the nation's first potential combat mission beyond its territorial waters in centuries.
The three vessels - two destroyers and a supply ship - left a port on Hainan island amid increasing worries about China's military power. The mission will also challenge China's ability to co-operate with other naval forces patrolling the Gulf of Aden, one of the world's busiest sea lanes. Warships from India, Russia, NATO and the US are cruising the Somali waters, plagued by pirate attacks this year.
