The Gulf of Aden, one of the main sea-lanes that links the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, is infested with pirates from Somalia. It is reported that over 100 merchant vessels were attacked and around 40 people were kidnapped by Somali pirates in or near the Gulf of Aden last year. To fight piracy, an international force is being formed under the leadership of the US.In a press conference yesterday, vice chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council Chao Chien-min said that “the ROC government is studying the feasibility of sending a naval force to the region to protect Taiwan’s vessels.” ..more..
