War without Mercy the terror and violence in Somalia
Islam places a high value on human life and prohibits the killing of innocent people. Islam believes that the wellbeing and genuine interests of all Somalis are the major needs we face now and in the future. In the same vein, Islam equally forbids the torture of any creature. Thus it is especially disturbing to watch the recent clip on of the latest barbaric killing committed by the Al-shabab “Jihadist youngsters,” who are operating according to an indoctrination into the most radical, violent, most extreme and fanatical version of inhumane beliefs. These non main-streamers' beliefs regarding violence have raised a considerable confusion and misunderstanding in the Islamic world, particularly among the traditional Somali religious elders and scholarly leaders. The general perception of recent times is that things are going poorly and that as a Somalis we are losing our cultural identity. As our faith is tested by violence, there is mass apprehension and paranoia about the recent dangers created by Al-shabab. Sadly, Al-shabab sews hostility, hatred, despair and indifference in our once warmhearted society. For instance, they forced a complete shutdown of the major roads leading to the capital Mogadishu, and they continuously shelled residential buildings, killing defenseless civilians. Other towns like Kismayu, Merca, and Garbaharey, Balcad and Dhusamareeb were wrecked, and many Somalis disappeared. In addition, Al-shabab's violence includes the inhumane hacking of fellow brother Somalis with machetes. Their brutality is shared with other international terrorist groups, as is their desire for and pursuit of revenge in political life. At the time of the struggle for Somali independence, traditional religious leaders had influence and they used their power properly. In the early days of Somali independence many Wadads such as Sheikh Hassan Barsane, Sheikh Bashir, and Sheikh Aweys resisted the colonial occupation. Wadads generally behave consistently with scripture and they have an explicit voice in the major decisions of the mosque- for instance, nominating Caaqil and crowning the Suldaan, Wabar, Graad or Ugaas. When necessary, they lead the death compensation process (Diya) and also share their vision of reconciliation with the common elders. In the early days of Somali independence, Wadads served as mediators and they shared their understanding with rest of the Somalis, working for peace and the welfare of society as a whole. In contrast, Alshabab are Taliban-like Jihadists who raise black flags over the abandoned city of Kismayu in southern Somalia. They are merely power-hungry addlepate who hide behind veils. Al-shabab, day to day, are actively continuing their reign of terror among the remnants of the survivors. They are advocating barbarism and bring shame and disgrace to the traditional art of governance as well as to the Somali Wadads. They are coming into the country, which has been stateless since 1990. They are coming in groups of foreign nationalities. They declared war on the dead as well as on the living Somalis. They adhere to a principle of no respect for differences of opinion with other Ahlu Sunna or traditional wadads. Al-Shabab militants decided to kill, destroy and eradicate anything and everything towards their goal of a society built upon their views of Somali traditional Islamic beliefs. They are attempting to achieve this goal by using the name of Islam to abuse others, and to fuel hatred, superiority and dominance. One of their reprehensible tactics is that they cover their faces and assassinate frightened people as they terrorize their opponents. Victims' bodies were either charred, or their faces were mutilated beyond recognition. The world witnessed some of the worst atrocities ever committed to mankind, including killing elders, children, and women. One example is the latest hit and run war committed in Guriceel as they are trying to consolidate control over Central regions. Perhaps the best place to begin to think about the possible role of the International Criminal Court concerns the atrocities committed by Al-shabab in Somalia, and I would like to offer a glimpse of this unfortunate chapter of violence and terror in the modern history of Somalia. Al-shabab willfully destroyed graves of well-known religious personalities who liberated our country from the tyranny of Italian fascists, destroying monuments and other palaces of Sufis and mystics. As the Somali proverb says, “ Caado la gooyo caro Alley leedahay” that means “ breaking an old tradition will provoke the wrath of Allah.” Custom is a recognized source of law and judgment in Islamic Shari'a if does not contradict any of the clear injunctions of the Shari'a laws. One of the worst Alshabab atrocities occurred when a thirteen year old girl was accused of adultery and then stoned to death in the southern port of Kismayu, Somalia. Descending into despair over this barbaric action, many recent Somali traditional religious elders kept silent, though they did express their sorrow on a few rare occasions as the victim family was turned into mourning. Their silences were cowardly acts and often a sign of betrayals. Since innocent civilians feel victimized by the fighting, the majority of the Somali people believe that Al-shabab is an obstacle to the ongoing peace process. In my view, the fact that most Somalis view Al-shabab as problematic is an undeniably true statement and should be taken to heart. Two thoughts may come to my mind when I observe the basic perpetuation of the Al-shabab policy. First, they hate the existence of a homogenous group of Somali people. Instead they want to bring multi-national terror groups from various parts of the world into Somalia so that they can exacerbate the already unstable Somali situation and render it more complex and chaotic rather than bringing a peaceful solution to the crisis. Secondly, as their name shows, Al-shabab, who developed among the gangs of war, know nothing but how to heinously kill defenseless civilians and traditional elders. With good intentions, Somali peace loving elders seek solutions to build a genuine government of national unity. However, they have ruined the Somali race's dignity and values, and they have purposely destroyed our homogenous and traditional Somali culture. It seems clear that questions of justice and accountability for all of these atrocities must be addressed by the world as Al-shabab hinders Somali's latest attempt of peace and durable reconciliation. The world has witnessed their Taliban style regime and the way they treat their own people. Before it is too late, we Somalis need to stop the atrocities committed by Al-Shabab in our beloved country. Again, we plea to the international community to stop Al-shabab atrocities before it is too late. hawiye barbaric and genocidal funded, very sick and twisted vedio
