Guinea-Bissau president shot dead

Renegade soldiers have shot dead the president of the West African country of Guinea-Bissau, Joao Bernardo Vieira. The news comes just hours after the killing of the army chief of staff, who had fallen out with Mr Vieira. Gunfire has sounded in the capital Bissau, but the army has insisted no coup is under way. Guinea-Bissau is one of the world's poorest states.
