16 Bulgarian sailors abducted by Somali pirates.Somali pirates back in action, seize 5 ships

Sixteen Bulgarians are aboard the cargo ship Malaspina Castle, which is currently abducted by Somali priates.There are a total of 24 people aboard, coming from Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine and the Philippines. The pirates took the 32 000 tons ship in the morning of April 6th. When it was abducted, it was sailing under the Panamanian flag. This is the fifth vessel that has been abducted for the last two days near the Somali coast.The ships taken by priates so far have been French, British, Taiwanese, Yemenite and German. According to the safety center of the EU responsible for the region, there is merit to assume that the crew is unharmed.

NAIROBI, Kenya — For the first three months of 2009, Somalia's notorious pirates faded from the headlines as a massive international naval force moved in, and many observers thought the pirates were running scared.
Not so fast: the pirates have hijacked at least five vessels since Saturday.
Using a new strategy, they are operating further away from warships patrolling the Gulf of Aden. And they no longer have to contend with the choppy waters that always plague the seas off Somalia in the early part of the year.
That has allowed the sea bandits to come back in force — seizing five vessels over a 72-hour period.
