Somali pirates demand ransom for American hostage

MOGADISHU - Somali pirates holding an American captain of a Danish freighter hostage are demanding a ransom to free him, a pirate commander told AFP Friday, without specifying the amount."We are demanding to get ransom and to return home safely before releasing the captain," Abdi Garad told AFP by phone from Somalia's northern pirate lair of Eyl.
Garad also said their men were negotiating with the US navy "not to be arrested if they release the captain and the American officials will hopefully fulfill that condition otherwise the captain will not be released.""There will be no giving up. We are in a position to defend our team and if the Americans try to cheat us there will be bad consequences," he added, without elaborating.
On Thursday Garad said they were sending reinforcements to help the hostage takers in the Indian Ocean high seas.Pirates on Wednesday attacked the 17,500-tonne Danish-operated Maersk Alabama with its 20 American crew who later retook control of the ship, but the gang of four took the captain hostage on a lifeboat..more..http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/world/04/10/09/somali-pirates-demand-ransom-american-hostage
