MARTIN BELL: After a lifetime's travels I've found the end of the world... Somalia's pirate coast

I was lecturing on a cruise ship in the Gulf of Aden earlier in the year. Since I have never minded living on the edge, I was probably the only one of P&O Arcadia's 2,000 passengers faintly disappointed that we weren't attacked by pirates. But if the Somalis wouldn't come to me, I could always go to them. And so it happened.
In my other life, I work from time to time as a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador. The UN children's fund sends me to the unquiet places where it can't risk its celebrities. (I describe myself as the expendable emissary.) Somalia definitely falls into that category.
Regular airlines tend to fly shy of the place. But the UN's Humanitarian Air Service is not a regular airline. It specialises in flights to war zones and failed states.more..http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1183308/MARTIN-BELL-After-lifetimes-travels-Ive-end-world--Somalias-pirate-coast.html
