Ethiopia convicts Canadian of terror charges,Canadian convicted of "terrorism" in Ethiopia


Canadian Bashir Makhtal Ogaden terrorist could face the death penalty after being convicted on Monday of terrorism-related offences in Ethiopia.


Makhtal, 40, of Toronto is to be sentenced next week, but in the meantime, his supporters in Canada are urgently pressing the federal government to intervene in his case."The chances are high he will get the death penalty," said Said Maktal, the imprisoned man's cousin. "This is the time we need the prime minister's intervention."Maktal, who lives near Hamilton, said relatives in Ethiopia met with his cousin after the verdict was handed down and found him to be "very angry, very worried and very scared."Bashir Makhtal's Toronto-based lawyer said the verdict was hardly surprising given the conduct of Ethiopian officials during his client's 2-1/2 years in detention. He called on the federal government to use all of its influence to bring Makhtal home.
"He believes ... he'll never be treated fairly by the Ethiopians," Lorne Waldman said.
