ETHIOPIAN, SOMALI LEADERS HOLD TALKS

ADDIS ABABA, July 8 (NNN-ENA) -- Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has held talks here with the President of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia, Sherif Shiek Ahmed, on matters of mutual interest.The two sides discussed Tuesday how to mobilize the international community in support of the peace efforts in Somalia, a senior official with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told journalists.Foreign terrorist groups coming from various parts of the world have been escalating pressure on the Somali government and on the African Union (AU) peacekeeping forces (AMISOM) in Somalia, the official said.Thus, the transitional government of Somalia had recently called upon the international community for assistances as the problem wais beyond its capacity, he added.After the Somali government’s quest for support, the international community understood the situation on the ground and began to reconsider the issue in Somalia. The discussions between the two leaders focused on how to use this opportunity in order to pull the necessary assistance from the international community, he added. The two also discussed the contribution of Ethiopia in support of the peace-building efforts in Somalia, he said.They underscored the need to intensify efforts against terrorist groups in Somali who had cross-border agendas of destabilizing the region.President Sherif Shiek Ahmed is here for a two-day official visit. -- NNN-ENA
