BALEDWEYNE. Somali government soldiers have taken the control of Beledweyene town, the regional capital of Hiraan region in central Somalia, witnesses and official said on Sunday.
Residents said the government soldiers have for the first time seen in the west part of the town where the Islamist rebels have been controlling since the withdrawal of the Ethiopian troops.
Mohamed Dhaqane Aar, a Somali MP said the government soldiers led by General Mukhtar Hussein Afrah seized the western part of the city without strong resistance and that one of the government soldiers was wounded in short fighting between the Islamist rebels and the government soldiers on Sunday morning. There is no word from the Islamist rebels in the town and it is not known why they have vacated their bases in the western part of the city, but more Ethiopian troops with armoured vehicles entered in Balanbal town in Galgaduud region and Kalaberka, a key junction near Beledweyne on Saturday. Residents reported that the Ethiopian troops moved towards Beledweyne town on Sunday morning and arrived in Elgal town about 20 km north of Beledweyne.
