A COMPREHENSIVE review of security arrangements at military bases in Australia will examine whether unarmed civilians can provide adequate protection against terrorists with automatic weapons. The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, said yesterday that after revelations about a planned terrorist attack on a base in Sydney he convened the national security committee of cabinet to find out from Defence officials if the facilities were well enough protected. Mr Rudd said the defence leaders believed present security at bases was adequate but they would carry out an immediate review, including an examination of whether to continue to use civilian contractors. ‘‘What I want to be confident of is that the security at each installation is right, and that it is calibrated to our security needs,’’ he said. The Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, sent a message yesterday to military personnel, saying he supported the review but believed safety measures at bases were effective. ‘‘Some recent commentary has brought into question the security of Defence bases and establishments,’’ he said in an Order of the Day. ‘‘I am confident that the security arrangements currently in place at our bases are effective … It is timely to remind all personnel of their individual and collective responsibilities to remain vigilant and report any security concerns to their Chain of Command and base security personnel.’’..more..http://www.smh.com.au/national/defence-checks-bases-amid-terrorism-arrests-20090805-ea2x.html Yacqub Khayre was a faultless child, his uncle claims http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,25890398-5006784,00.html An uncle’s regret: a flight from Somalia gone wrong http://www.smh.com.au/national/an-unclex2019s-regret-a-flight-from-somalia-gone-wrong-20090805-ea2y.html Al-Shabaab in spotlight after counter-terrorism raid
