Bodies of dead UPDF peacekeepers arrive
The bodies of the four UPDF peacekeepers, killed by the Somali Islamist fundamentalists in Mogadishu on Thursday, were flown back home yesterday morning through Entebbe Military Airbase.The Defence/army spokesperson, Lt. Col. Felix Kulayigye refused to name the dead soldiers, saying they needed to first inform their families. “We cannot reveal their identities now, before we inform the families,” he said.Somali insurgents detonated two suicide car bombs yesterday morning at the African Union (AU) peacekeeping headquarter in Mogadishu, killing nine soldiers including the deputy force commander, Maj. Gen. Juvenile Niyoyunguriza.The AU force commander, Maj. Gen. Nathan Mugisha, was also injured in the deadly attack on the peacekeepers composed of Burundian and Ugandan forces.Meanwhile, the French government said they had evacuated 17 soldiers from Mogadishu to Nairobi for treatment on Thursday night.Thursday’s bombings came as al Shabaab insurgents holding a French security consultant hostage issued demands in return for his release, including an immediate end to French support for the Horn of Africa nation’s governmentBut the French government said it would continue supporting the transition government of President Ahmed Sharif.
