Routine training...Pentagon ceremony...Silence in NY...NY soldiers far from home: 9/11 close to home reminder for service in Afghanistan

Washington (AP) The Coast Guard says it was a routine training exercise but this one took place in the Potomac River near the Pentagon amid the commemoration of the 9/11 anniversary. And it sparked some confusion. Although media reports suggested shots were fired, a Coast Guard official says there was no shooting. He says training takes place every day, and that it had nothing to do with the anniversary of the terror attacks.WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama says the nation was united in its grief and in its resolve after 9/11. And he's calling for a renewal of common purpose on this anniversary of the attacks.Obama spoke at the Pentagon, where he met with families of the victims of the attack there.NEW YORK (AP) Four moments of silence in New York have marked the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Mourners bowed their heads in silence to mark the times each World Trade Center tower was hit, and again at the times when the towers collapsed. Volunteers are joining with family members to read victims' names in a park near ground zero.

Forward Operating Base Altimur, Afghanistan - Some of the New Yorkers on the front line here were so young on 9/11 that they didn't fully understand what happened on that dark day.
But they all know that attack is why they are here - 6,700 miles from home, fighting a treacherous enemy and chasing the shadow of Osama Bin Laden.
"I take pride in being here," said Pvt. Leonardo Burgos, 27, of the South Bronx, who is serving a year-long tour in Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
