NAIROBI, Dec. 3 (TF.SF) -- The African Union (AU) on Thursday condemned the Somali suicide attack in the capital Mogadishu, which killed at least 22 people including three government ministers. In a statement issued in Nairobi, the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) sent its condolences to the bereaved families, saying it has mobilized necessary resources to support the casualties and their relatives during the trying period."The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) condemns in the strongest terms possible today's suicide attack by armed opposition groups resulting in the death of ministers of the Somalia Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and ordinary citizens," the statement said. The suicide bomber detonated an explosion inside Hotel Shamo at KM 5 area of Mogadishu during the graduation ceremony of medical students of the Banadir University , killing 22 civilians and injuring several others. Witnesses said the attack appeared to have targeted government officials. Islamists are fighting the UN-backed government, which controls small pockets of territory in the country. "AMISOM wishes to state that such inhumane and cowardly act aimed at stalling the peace process will not deter the resolve and determination of the African Union to support the people of Somalia in their quest for peace and reconciliation," the statement said. The hotel is reportedly often used by the few foreigners – aid workers, journalists and diplomats -- who still visit the war-ravaged capital.
