The FBI is searching for five "missing students" from the Washington, D.C., area who may have gone overseas, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Families of the missing men "raised concerns" with the FBI, which has launched an investigation into the matter, the source said.
The source said agents from the FBI's Washington field office have been interviewing family members, friends and others who may know where the five students went, and how they got there.
"It's a concern," the source said of the missing men.
It is believed the men are Muslim. Asked whether the men may have gone overseas to join a terrorist group, the source didn't answer.
The FBI in Minneapolis has been grappling with a possibly similar situation for more than a year.
Since late 2007 nearly 20 young men from the Minneapolis area have left their homes to join an Al Qaeda-linked group in Somalia. Like the latest situation in the nation's capital, the Minnesota men's families were the first to bring the issue to authorities' attention.
The FBI investigation in Minneapolis has resulted in several indictments and terrorism-related charges, but many of those charged are still overseas.news source
