President Obama used his State of the Union address tonight to scold the GOP and urge pols on both sides of the aisle to “put aside the schoolyard taunts about who is tough” on terror.
But then Obama beat his chest for racking up a higher body count of evildoers in his first year on the job than George W. Bush did in his last year as a “war president.”“In the last year, hundreds of Al Qaeda’s fighters andaffiliates , including many senior leaders, have been captured or killed — far more than in 2008,” Obama said, alluding to secret U.S. raids in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen.And he did it without torturing anybody, the President added — which he banned.
So much for the anti-war candidate of 2008.There was no mention of Al Qaeda founder and 15-year fugitive Osama Bin Laden, who predecessor Bush mentioned at least once or twice in his speeches to joint sessions of Congress.
“Since the day I took office, we have renewed our focus on the terrorists who threaten our nation. We have made substantial investments in our homeland security and disrupted plots that threatened to take American lives,” he said, according to a copy of his speech.
Well, there was that near miss aboard Northwest Flight 253 on Christmas Day. Obama said “unacceptable gaps revealed by the failed Christmas attack” are being filled, such as at airports and in intelligence agencies.The President said that the long and painful Iraq war “is ending,” after 4,692 U.S. and coalition troops — so far — have perished on its dusty battlefields, “and all of our troops are coming home.” Even in the Afghanistan war he has escalated, the conflict will be turned over to Afghans by “July of 2011, and our troops can begin to come home.”“There will be difficult days ahead,” Obama predicted. “But I am confident we will succeed.”
