AlQaida testing, plotting...Focus in Yemen...Cartoonist's...
HONOLULU (AP) A top counterterrorism official says al-Qaida is working to test U.S. defenses and plotting another attack on American soil. Michael Leiter of the National Counterterrorism Center calls the failed Christmas Day attack on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit a stark reminder "of the insidious threats we face."

SAN'A, Yemen (AP) Al-Qaida's affiliate in Yemen is the focus of an intensifying campaign by government forces. President Barack Obama says the Nigerian man accused of trying to blow up a Northwest
Airlines flight appears to have been trained and sent by al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen has deployed several hundred extra troops to two mountainous provinces considered al-Qaida strongholds.

KABUL (AP) Afghan President Hamid Karzai must submit new names for about 70 percent of his Cabinet after a stinging rebuke from parliament today. Lawmakers rejected 17 of Karzai 24 nominees. One analyst says the president was under pressure from a lot of people who campaigned for him, and now that parliament has rejected them Karzai might get the nominees he really wants.

FORWARD OPERATING BASE COBRA, Iraq (AP) The top U.S. commander in Iraq says things are still on track for American combat troops to leave the country by the end of August, despite Iraq's national elections being put-off until March. Gen. Ray Odierno says his withdrawal plan has "plenty of flexibility" and anticipates possible election delays.

COPENHAGEN (AP) The head of Denmark's intelligence agency says a Somali man accused of attacking a Danish cartoonist has "close relations to the Somali terrorist group al-Shabab and al-Qaida leaders in eastern Africa." A spokesman for al-Shabab denies the link, but says the group applauds the man's action. The cartoonist angered the Muslim world three years ago with his depiction of the Prophet Muhammed.
