Two killed planting roadside bomb in Somalia, Mogadishu weapons market booms ahead of battle

MOGADISHU — Two Somalis were killed by an explosive device they were planting next to a road in Mogadishu, police said Thursday.
Body parts were scattered around a small hole sunk by the explosive, which police said had been supposed to target government officials.
"The remains you see here are the dead bodies of the suspected militants who were preparing a roadside bomb attack in the street in order to target government officials," police official Mohamed Ahmed told AFP.
"But the bomb went off during the procedure and killed the two guys who were planting it," he explained.Somali government officials are often targeted by roadside or car bombs set by hardline militia fighting the Western-backed government. On Monday, State Minister of Defence Yusuf Mohamed survived a car bomb explosion that killed two passers-by.The government, backed by African Union peacekeepers, is planning an offensive against the hardline Islamist rebels led by the Shebab, a radical militia group sympathetic to Al Qaeda.
