Al Shabaab suspects released

SIX of the suspected Somali Al Shabaab terrorists who were arrested last week have been released, Sunday Vision has learnt.

The eight were arrested by a joint force of security agents conducted by the Joint Anti-Terrorism Squad (JATT) in a swift operation conducted in Kisenyi, a Kampala slum with strong Somali presence.

The six were arrested along with Hashi Hussien Farah, the wanted Al Shabaab terrorist linked to the Al-Qaeda, in an operation conducted between 2:00am and 5:00am last Thursday in Hotel Ramathan in Kisenyi.

Security sources identified the terror suspects as Mohammed Muhammad, Mohammed Abdul Mohammed, Deqi Winyi, Hassan Abdugadir and Ahmed Bashir.

“It is our duty to pick suspected terrorists, interrogate them and screen them. The six were arrested, screened as released on police bond,’ said a source attached to JATT who talked on condition of anonymity.

A police officer who is privy to the investigation of the six suspects said: “There are no specific charges against these three, but they are under investigation. We will let you know of the progress and if they will be charged in court.”

Farah, who has an Australian passport, was first arrested by the Kenyan police on March 13, 2010 as he was trying to enter Kenya from Uganda at the Busia border.

The Kenyan police released him under unclear circumstances. He had been on the international list of wanted terrorists.
He was wanted by the Australian police for planning an attack in Melbourne.

Somali sources in Kisenyi intimated to Sunday Vision that Farah had stayed in Uganda for close to a year.

Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Felix Kulayigye said they didn’t know that Farah was a “wanted man”.

The Al-Shabaab have made several fatal attacks on the Ugandan and Burundian army bases in Mogadishu in the past and have vowed to extend their operations and attack targets inside the two countries.
