The driver, from Ambassador Cab, was identified by his manager as Bashir Kassim Abraham, who was in his early 20s. Abraham was originally from Somalia, said the manager, Jamal Ganamo.
Abraham had just picked up two male passengers at the XTC Caberet on Stemmons. There, according to withesses, the two men had an altercation with at least one other patron.
As the cab was headed north on the Stemmons frontage road, someone in another vehicle pulled up and opened fire, police said, striking Abraham and his two passengers.
The two -- who have not been identified -- tossed the driver out of the cab, then fled in it. Police found Abraham. He was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. he two passengers showed up at Parkland, seeking medical attention. They were treated, then arrested on unrelated assualt charges while homicide detectives continue their investigation.
The original shooter remains at large.
An employee at a hotel near the nightclub said violence there is commonplace.
"Just about every weekend or every other weekend, there are gunshots coming from that parking lot as they're leaving from 3 to 5 in the morning," said Estela Nolasco, who works the Wingate Hotel's front desk. bdifatah Dualeh, another cabdriver, said he, too, was at the XTC early today and turned the two men down when they approached him for a ride.
"They looked mad and cussed at each other. I got scared," Dualeh said.
