Good To Know: The Somalian Word For 'Youth'

(WCCO)The terrorist bombings in Uganda killed 76 people last week, and the group claiming responsibility for the attacks is from Somalia just across the border. It is called al Shabab. Don said al Shabab means "youth." And, that sends shivers through a large part of Minneapolis.
There are more Somalis living in the Twin Cities than anywhere else outside of Mogadishu. They came here to escape the mayhem and lawlessness of their country and are struggling to put together lives American-style.
But they haven't been able to escape al Shabab, "The Youth." It needs young people. Dozens of those kids have been recruited right here in the Twin Cities and have gone off to wage jihad in Somalia.
A number have been killed in fighting, and at least one is accused of a suicide bombing. Experts say they left because they never fit in America, and they were called to jihad by radical clerics on the Internet. In America, youth is a time to live life to its fullest. In Mogadishu, "youth" is a time to die.
