MOGADISHU (Reuters) - One Ugandan peacekeeper was killed and two others wounded in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Thursday when rebels attacked African Union forces near the country's parliament.
Uganda and Burundi have sent 7,200 troops to Somalia to guard the port and airport and shield President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed from attack, but hardline militants now control much of the capital and swathes of the southern and central regions.
"One Ugandan soldier (was) killed and 2 others injured today," Barigye Ba-Hoku, the AU force's spokesman, told Reuters.
"This happened in an attack around the areas of parliament house. We have chased away the rebels," he said.
The parliament house is about 500 metres west of the presidential palace.
It was not immediately clear how the peacekeeper was killed. "When you are in the frontline and fighting you cannot know which type of weapon kills you," Ba-Hoku said.
"Two dead bodies of those who attacked us are lying here and many other dead bodies are lying in the bushes."
A suicide bomber blew himself up at the gates of the presidential palace on Monday, wounding two soldiers in an attack claimed by the al Qaeda-linked rebel group al Shabaab.
