A cargo vessel operated by Japanese shipping company NYK-Hinode Line Ltd. lost contact after issuing an emergency signal off Kenya Sunday morning local time, the Japanese transport ministry said Monday.
The ministry said a foreign ship sailing nearby received radio communication that pirates have boarded the Panamanian-registered cargo vessel IZUMI, which was sailing off Monbasa, Kenya.
The 14,162-ton IZUMI had a crew of 20 Filipinos, said the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Loaded with steel products, the ship left Kimitsu port in Chiba Prefecture in Japan on Sept. 12 and, after passing Singapore, it was scheduled to arrive at Monbasa on Sunday, the ministry said.
European Union troops engaged in anti-piracy operations in waters near Somalia said the cargo ship is heading for Somalia and is under the watch of the troops' fleet.
In Japan, the transport ministry said it has set up a liaison office to gather information with the help of the Tokyo-based shipping company and other relevant authorities in Japan and abroad.
