New Somali Prime Minister has Buffalo Ties

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Somali native Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed was nominated Thursday by the Somali President to be the African nation's next Prime Minister.
Mohamed has many ties to Buffalo and Western New York, earning a masters degree in American Studies from SUNY Buffalo. Mohamed also worked on Joel Giambra's successful campaign to become Erie County Executive back in 1999. He then went to work for Erie County in the field of contract compliance.
Mohamed has been employed by the Department of Transportation since 2002 where he worked to enforce civil rights programs. Just this year he began teaching leadership skills at Erie Community College.
Mohamed's nomination comes after the former prime minister resigned last month over the government's inability to control a violent radical Islamist insurgency that has crippled the country for years.
Mohamed must next receive approval from the Somali Parliament.
