In my childhood I used to hear about former heroes and heroines of Somali Youth League (SYL), who fought the colonialist, SYL are now our role models as nationalist, they fought for our country’s independence.
In March 2002, I met and interviewed one of the Pioneers of SYL, Mr. Ali Maslah Verdura in Qoryooley; he explained to me how they fought the white men at the time when Somalia was under colonization.
When I asked him about his vision on Somalia that day, he was quick to say that he is disillusioned and absolutely disturbed by what is going on, he said that he couldn’t imagine that the country they tirelessly fought and died for has gone to ruins.
In April 2002, when I left Mogadishu, the legacy of SYL was still alive and nationalist were performing their roles, there weren’t militia groups like the ones we have today in Somalia whose aims are killing, looting and causing endless destruction of our country, there weren’t any links with foreign terrorists groups like what we have today.
Today, in Somalia we have two groups: One which is aligned to the western countries Like U.S.A and Britain, who believe that they are their big Brothers and those who are linked to Al-Qaeda believing in Osama as their Big Brother!
My question is: Where is the Spirit of SYL and their idea of “Somalia for Somalis”?
