Somalia’s incumbent president announces his second term bid

Mogadishu, Somalia (TF.SF) - Somalia’s incumbent interim president Sheikh Shariif Sheikh Ahmed has on Wednesday announced his presidential bid through a campaign that sought to fix the barrage of disunity that enveloped his beleaguered western-backed administration.Addressing more than 100 Somali legislatures at a function in the restive capital Mogadishu, president Shariif indicated his willingness for unity of purpose ahead of presidential elections whose date is yet to be announced. In launching his second term campaign and reiterating the importance of emerging out of the current row which resulted a profound impact on the efficiency of the government. The president asked the legislatures to first help in solving the impassioned standoff between the all-time important interim institutions of the government. The president used the occasion to tout his policies while taking issues with purported extension of the term of the interim parliament. Over the past few weeks, the administration of president Sharif and the interim parliament failed to reach agreement on whether to extend the term of the parliament. But the parliament has since extended its term without consultation with the executive."I am ready to take part in the coming presidential election of our country. But first we need to understand each other, to settle the dispute between the important institutions of the government” the embattled president told the members of parliament.“We are counting on sorting out the difference before we talk about the elections. We should not focus much on politics, let us agree on the issue of extension of our term and then after that we can talk about organizing presidential elections” He described the disunity and lack of consensus evident in the interim institution as a big issue that can result a lot of frustration for all arms of his government."If both the executive and parliament each extend their terms without consulting each other, then that will not be possible. We need to join hands in addressing amicably this thorny issue. We need to move with speed because time is essential” The upcoming presidential race in which president Shariif emerges as a top contender in Somalia’s murky politics will serve as a stage where many new candidates would come into sight and convene ambitious campaign to hold the country’s power nod. The candidacy of president Shariif comes amidst a never-ending heated standoff between him and speaker Sharif Hassan regarding the extension of the term of the government and that of the parliament that will officially expire on August 2011.
