There have been conflicting reports on the internet about the true identity of the Minnesotan bomber who managed to kill along with other accomplices AMISOM and TFG soldiers on the 3st of may 2011. Although AMISOM in their press release claimed to have foiled the operation, al-shabaab hailed it as a success and warned civilians to stay well away from AMISOM/TFG bases, as they promised more of the same. I honestly do not know how news agencies such as Associated Press, came to the conclusion the Minnesotan’s name is “Abdullahi Ahmed”, when he clearly in the audio message he refered to himself simply as Ahmed! and in Somali culture when someone asks your name ,you don’t give your second name.
the website the revealed the name of the bomber as “Asadullahi Ahmed Al-amriki” , and as i explained when the story came out, is that “asadullahi” simply means The lion of God, and it was put before his name to praise his action, also Ahmed in the English segment called the Muslim you to go to Somalia and “die like lions”. Asadullahi didn’t make sense to the AP translator so he thought the website Misspelled his name, thus, removing the letters “SA” and exchanging it with the letter B, making it Abdullahi. Phew!
Are we closer to his true identity?
The Al-shabaab radio station stated the age of Somali-American bomber as 25 years Old, and when Ahmed was asked about when he left his country of residence to join the jihad in Somalia ,he answered two years, making his disappearance from the states around mid 2009. After trawling the internet for clues and contacting Minnesota based Somali community advocacy group, i seem to hit a brick, so did by the looks of it the FBI.
The only names on the FBIs Most wanted site, that come even close to the bomber are as follows and a clear mismatch:
Abdulaahi Ahmed Farah, 32 years old (when he was charged), a naturalized U.S. citizen from Minneapolis, was charged in October 2009 for conspiring to kill, kidnap, maim, and injure persons outside the U.S.
According to court documents, Farah previously fought with Al Shabaab in Somalia in 2007 and later returned to Minneapolis where he encouraged others to travel to Somalia to fight.
Farah, who previously worked as a cab driver, is still at large and was last seen in October 2009 at the U.S.-Mexico border crossing.
Ahmed Ali Omar, a legal permanent resident who lived in Minneapolis, was charged in an indictment filed in August 2009 and unsealed in November with providing and conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim, and injure persons outside the U.S., possessing and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and solicitation to commit a crime of violence. The indictment alleged that Omar persuaded four other men to go with him to Somalia to train with Al Shabaab in December 2007. Omar, who graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis in 2004, is still at large and believed to be in Somalia.
From the dates the pair were indicted and ages its clear they are not the alleged bomber, but it seems to me this “Ahmed” who carried out the raid against the base, is another ahmed who slipped through the net, and we are only getting to know about him due to the bombing.
Minneapolis may be inaccurate.
This case seems to be similar to Daniel Maldonado AKA Daniel Aljughaifi (pictured, left), who travelled to Somalia with his family via Egypt without raising suspicion,in order to fight along the then Islamic Courts Union.
his case only came to light when he was captured on the Somali-Kenyan border by Kenyan troops trying to intercept ICU fighters persuade by Ethiopian troops. It’s easy for individual to slip through the “net” as it where without much fuss, especially with little or no previous criminal record.

Farah Mohamed Beledi who was on the FBI’s most wanted list and was one of the Somali’s named in the “Conspiracy to provide Material Support to Terrorists” indictment that was handed down by a Grand Jury in November of 2009. Abdullahi Ahmed who some say is "Cabdulaahi Ahmed Faarax" is also named in the indictment, and it seems both Ahmed and Beledi used rental cars and headed to Mexico as a route to get back to Mogadishu.
