A senior Ugandan commander was among four peacekeepers killed by militant insurgent group al-Shabaab over the weekend, a spokesman for the Ugandan army said.
Lt. Colonel Patrick Tibihwa, commander of 23 Battalion, became the highest-ranking Ugandan peacekeeper to have been killed in Somalia when he was hit by a “stray bullet” while touring recently capture positions in Bondere district, Felix Kulayigye, spokesman for the Ugandan People’s Defence Force said. Three others were killed when they were hit by a mortar in the same area.
The peacekeeping mission, known as AMISOM, said it and government forces seized full control of Bondere and Hodan on Saturday, bringing eight Mogadishu districts fully under government control, compared to four under the full control of al-Shabaab.
AMISOM, believing it has increased security in the capital, brought its civilian staff to Mogadishu in May as pro-government forces continue to make gains.
