Join Somali-Americans in Minneapolis as they show support for peace in Somalia and Somali Prime Minister Farmajo ahead of World Refugee Day, June 20th, 2011. Demonstration is planned for Saturday, June 18th, 2011 at Brian Coyle Center, 420 15th Ave South in Minneapolis, MN 55454 3pm-5pm.
Los Angeles 14 June 2011 - After twenty years of civil war, citizens in Somalia continue to suffer daily. They had hope for their country until last week when U.N.-backed accord called for the resignation of Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmajo). Demonstrations have been taking place in Somalia and worldwide to support peace and a better Somalia during the week. Somali-Americans in Minneapolis will demonstrate this Saturday to bring awareness to problems facing Somalia and Somali refugees. According to many of them, Farmajo had put in action positive changes in the past six months. Farmajo, who also holds an American citizenship, was educated in United States. Many see him as someone who brought a fresh prospective to Somali politics.
Somalia is facing its worst humanitarian crisis with one of the worst droughts on record. Somali Refugee Awareness Project is urging the United States government to help the suffering people of Somalia who have been displaced from their country for twenty years and who live in terrible conditions in overcrowded refugee camps in neighboring countries. Saado Ali Warsame, a renowned Somali singer, is asking young people to get involved in helping Somalia get the attention it needs in the world. “We have received so much negative publicity for the past twenty years, the people of Somalia need a second chance. We need people like Farmajo who care about the people and want to do right.”
Somali Refugee Awareness Project: An advocacy group designed to bring mainstream media attention and action on the current Somali refugee crisis in Africa. According to UNHCR, Somalia remains one of the countries generating the highest number of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) in the world. An estimated 1.4 million Somalis are displaced within the country while another 680,000 live as refugees in the neighboring countries. Some refugees have been in the same camps for 20 years and live in the worst overcrowding conditions. Action is needed to help Somali refugees resettle back to a peaceful Somalia.
