Communique released from AU Summit in Kigali

Closing Statement by H. E. Zahra M. Ali Samantar, Minister of State of the Office of the Prime Minister of Somalia.


The African Union summit aimed at discussing the implementation of International Convention on Human Rights Act in Somalia held in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, has just issued the summit’s communique, highlighting ways forward in safeguarding human rights issues in Somalia.

The summit’s communique urges the TFG to prioritize security and maintaining law and order in Somalia, upholding and implementing international human rights acts and assessing the Islamic point of view in regards to Somalia’s constitution in order to avert civilian casualties.It also called for respecting international regulations for refugees and asylum seekers in Somalia.

The Kigali summit also assured the Somali government bodies that they will be trained to make sure that the government meets the required standards in meeting its constitutional obligations.The summit urged the TFG to immediately speed up the implementation of internal regulations and safeguard the Somali population who are not taking part in the ongoing clashes.The AU summit which ended today in Kigali, also urged the AU Peacekeeping forces in Somalia to respect international human rights values and restrain from civilians casualties as required by the international human rights laws during times of war.The officials attending the Kigali summit called for the immediate implementations of the points stated in summit’s communique in assuring the safety of Somali civilian population.Among the attendants of summit were leaders from EU, AU, and UN human rights bodies like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and IGAD’s regional member states
