MESSAGE ON THE INAUGURATION OF THE
TRAINING COURSE FOR SOMALI ROBUST POLICE

Nairobi, 14th February 2013 – The Ambassador and Special Delegate of the Italian Government to the Somali Republic, Mr. Andrea Mazzella, welcomes the inauguration of the training course for robust police carried out by the Italian Carabinieri for 200 Somali Police men and women.
The Italian Carabinieri, supported by a team of AMISOM (Pro-Somalia Training Mission) in quality of observer, have inaugurated a training course at the Academy of Djibouti, in order to train Somali Police Forces.
The course will last 12 weeks and it has specifically been structured on the basis of the characteristics of the Somali Security Forces. It foresees the development of theoretical and practical activities, such as, for example, penal code and criminal procedure, public security and justice police activities, techniques of public order, international law, as well as a deep analysis of United Nations resolutions on the integration of women in the armed forces and in the police (Gender Issues).
In this regard, there are also some Italian Carabinieri women trainers, Officers and Marshals, who will follow directly the 17 Somali policewomen trainees.
The best trainees will be employed as future trainers, in order to provide the Somali Police with an autonomous training structure.
Italy is strongly committed in supporting the Somali security sector, though a wide range of activities for enhancing security and stabilization in the country. The Italian and the Somali Governments will work closely to strengthen the relation between the two Ministries of Interior.
