Al-Shabaab has imposed hefty taxes on clans and businesspeople in Barawe and Bulo Marer in the Lower Shabelle region, Somalia's Shabelle Media Network reported Wednesday (June 12th).
The militant group reportedly ordered the Habar Gidir clan to pay 300 million shillings ($16,200), Muransade clan 250 million shillings ($13,500) and other small clans in the region to pay similar amounts.
The clans were given ten days to pay, although it is not clear for what the money will be used.
Businesspeople in Bulo Marer were also told to pay unspecified amounts of money or their assets would be taken.
