Two killed in clash at terror-linked Kenyan mosque

At least two people were killed after police opened fire on Muslim youths outside an islamist mosque in the coastal city of Mombasa on Sunday.

Police said they raided the Masjid Mussa mosque after receiving intelligence that a meeting to recruit militants was going on.  At least one youth and a police officer were killed in the resulting clashes.  A police officer who was stabbed in the face later died of his wounds, said police commander Robert Kitur.  He added that another police officer was stabbed in the stomach and is being treated at a local hospital. Mr Kitur said that when officers entered the mosque they came under gunfire. 

 

He claimed the ringleaders had shielded themselves behind children and infants, the first time he had seen such a tactic used. DVDs during the raid.  The raid prompted violent protests around the mosque.  "They attacked our mosque, but they're not going to kill our spirit," one youth shouted from inside the mosque’s walls.  "Jihad is the way to go." More than four hours after the initial police raid, gunshots were still audible in the district.
