Somalia: Qur'an Teachers Arrested Over Indoctrination

Mogadishu — Federal Government of Somalia's security forces Saturday launched a surprise security sweep that led to the arrest of dozens of Qur'an recitation teachers in Mogadishu districts, Garowe Online reports.
Security sources disclose that Somali Intelligence and National Security Agency (NISA) suspected the holy Qur'an teachers of being Al Shabaab agents who are brainwashing and indoctrinating children at private schools in Mogadishu's Hodon and Wadajir districts.
Witnesses confirmed to GO that soldiers in armoured personnel carriers opened volleys of gunfire upon their arrival at pre-planned Qur'an schools.
Reacting to the new security sweep, a mother of two whose teacher has been taken into undisclosed custody for investigation expressed displeasure over the move: "It is an alarming issue which is new to the Somali people, it could eliminate Islam".
The holy Qur'an teachers' students reported that the security forces were abandoning the sufi schools by identifying whether the students are taught on wooden boards or exercise books.
"The moderate teachers are able to pursue their teachings here in Mogadishu because, the security sweep freed Qur'an teachers who use wooden boards," a Qur'an class monitor said.
Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group is believed to have set up indoctrination facilities in Mogadishu where the young children are brainwashed to carry out heinous activities such as suicide bombings and military-style ambushes.
