Death toll rises after suicide attacks in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU – The African Union said Monday 11 peace keepers from Burundi were killed in attacks from Islamist insurgents in Somalia's capital Mogadishu "The Burundian contingent of the AU mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has been under intense mortar attacks since February 17, 2009," the statement said. "These attacks have reached today an unprecedented level, resulting in the killing of 11 Burundian soldiers, while 15 others have sustained serious injuries. Last Friday, another Burundian peacekeeper was killed." The spokesman of Burundian army Colonel Adlophe Manirakiza, said earlier that six soldiers were killed in a suicide attack against a camp of Burundi soldiers with the African Union peacekeeping force. The attack, the deadliest against the AU peacekeepers in the Somali capital since early 2007, targeted the base in the south of the city. Terrorist Muktar Robow Abu Mansur, spokesman of the hard-line al-Shabaab Islamist rebels, claimed responsibility, saying "holy fighters ??? Terrorist carried out suicide attacks ... in the national university." One of the suicide bombers detonated a vest filled with explosives inside the camp, he said, while another drove a primed car into the base. Two civilians were also killed in a mortar attack from the Shabaab Terrorist rebels, who rejected to accept calls from Islamic clerics. The clerics called for the Insurgents to stop firing mortars in the city.Somali talaban minister says ‘foreign troops are not needed in Somalia’
