Mass. man in court to face charges in terror probe

BOSTON (Map, News) - A Massachusetts man is expected to be arraigned on charges he lied to federal authorities about the whereabouts of a man later convicted of training at an al-Qaida terrorist camp in Somalia. Tarek Mehanna, of Sudbury, was arrested in November and charged with lying to the FBI in December 2006 when asked about Daniel Maldonado. Mehanna was to be arraigned Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston.Mehanna told the FBI that Maldonado was living in Egypt and working for a Web site. But authorities said Maldonado had called Mehanna from Somalia urging him to join him in "training for jihad."
Maldonado pleaded guilty in 2007 to training alongside al-Qaida members with the goal of overthrowing the Somali government. He is serving a 10-year prison sentence.
