At a press conference held at the EU headquarters in Uganda, attended by EU military mission (EUTM Somalia) commander Colonel Gonzalez Elul, Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala Commander land forces, Uganda, and the EU ambassador to Uganda Vincent De Visscher, the mission will involve two batches of 1,000 troops being trained one after the other in Uganda.
The soldiers, who make up about one fifth of Somalia's entire army, will be trained in communications, to shoot using light weapons, fight in built-up areas and provide medical help to wounded colleagues.
Uganda is a principle contributor to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) whose force is commanded by a Uganda general. The EU military mission will operate on close corporation and coordination with international actors, in particular, the United Nations, AMISOM, and the United States of America.
