Ministry clarifies the arrest of journalists
The Director and Editor of Shabelle Media were arrested on Sunday for broadcasting news that misrepresented the situation in Mogadishu and that was detrimental to the national security.

The Ministry of Information, Posts & Telecommunications asked Shabelle to retract the story believing it to be factually incorrect and aiding the terrorists, which they were reluctant to do so. Later, the Ministry formally asked that Shabelle meet with the Ministry to discuss the matter. When Shabelle refused to cooperate, the Ministry asked the security agencies to take the issue further.

However, the Ministry offers further reassurance that the Government is seeking to resolve the issue with due process. The Government, as anyone, has the right to challenge media inaccuracies.

We consider it highly unprofessional those sensitive media reports are released without checking facts. While the Somali Government respects media freedom, we urge media practitioners to exercise due diligence in their reporting.
