The police forces of Somalia’s interim federal government are committed to destroying al Qaeda’s surrogate al Shabaab from the Somali capital Mogadishu as quickly as possible, a Somali police chief said Monday.Speaking to hundreds of police forces at a police academy in Mogadishu’s Hamar-jajab district, Sharif Sheikhuna Maye, the newly nominated Somali police chief, vowed police will not rest until the peace and security of Mogadishu are assured in short time.“It is compulsory on us (police) take care of our society. Peace and tranquility can’t be restored until the terrorists are cleared out from the capital,” Maye stated.“We have to face the live rounds of fire from al Shabaab, we have to sacrifice our lives to save tired and drought-affected people under shadows of trees and work on how they could be able to returned back to their homes after years of hardship, misery and affliction,” he noted.
The comments of the chief come as Mogadishu is divided into two parts. Its northern sections are under the control of the extremist militant group while the interim government dominates only small portions in southern Mogadishu. Many Somali soldiers complain about non-payment of wages, and Maye promised that every policeman will receive his monthly pension at the correct time.
Late last month, Somalia’s top military and police chiefs were nominated after the beleaguered president fired four top security officers, including police, military and intelligence chiefs.
The fired officers were accused of not satisfactorily performing their duties. During their terms of service, a number of government officials were assassinated in TFG-controlled districts of Mogadishu.
Forces of Somali transitional federal government early Tuesday morning apprehended 30 people in connection with insecurity activities in the Somali capital Mogadishu, witnesses said. The security forces of Somali government have conducted search operations in the neighborhoods of Mogadishu Waberi district. The security crackdowns came after unknown men attacked Somali police stations in the districts with hand grenades. Most of the arrested were young people, though a number of them were later released, according to local residents. It is not the first time Somali forces to conduct such security crackdowns.
However, no comments were available from the officials concerned so far.
