MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal authorities are trying to confirm the identity of a suicide bomber in Somalia who a militant group is claiming was a Somali-American from Minnesota.
The group al-Shabab said Thursday that 25-year-old Abdullahi Ahmed of Minneapolis bombed the African Union base in Mogadishu. The attack Monday killed two AU troops and one government soldier.
Minnesota FBI spokesman Steve Warfield says the agency is aware of the bombing and has people in the area investigating. He says authorities are trying to determine the man's identity and whether he has ties to Minnesota.
Roughly 20 young men have left Minnesota in recent years to possibly fight with al-Shabab in Somalia. Authorities have confirmed that one, Shirwa Ahmed, died in October 2008. He was the first known American suicide bomber in Somalia
