Somali Ambassador to India Wants Pirates Back. Indian Holding 105 Somali Pirates Captured Over Last Two Years

Somalia’s ambassador to India, Ebyan Ladane H. Salah, visited on June 19th 2011, more than 100 Somali pirates being held at a new jail in Mumbai, India and formally requested their return to Somalia for prosecution.

In an exclusive interview  Ambassador Ebyan explained that the Indian government is now holding 105 Somali pirates who were captured over the last two years by the Indian Navy which operates anti-piracy missions in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.
“Most of the pirates are from Bari, Nugal and Mudug regions which are controlled by a Somalia’s Puntland regional authority. Some others are from Hobyo, Haradhere and other districts in central Somalia. The Indian officials of that jail have told me that four of the pirates are very sick and are receiving treatment. Three others are allegedly under 18 years of age,” Ebyan said.

Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG), through the ambassador, sent the Indian government a formal request to put the pirates on trial in Somalia since they have not yet been prosecuted in India.
“I have asked Indian officials to persuade their government to hand over those 105 pirates to the peaceful regions of Somalia such as Puntland Administration,” said the ambassador.
She also explained that the lives of the pirates in prison are decent and they are housed in a separate section of the jail, designed to hold 500 prisoners. Many prisoners asked her to tell their families that they are alive and well.
India has taken an aggressive stance against pirates in recent months. The Indian Navy captured 61 Somali pirates from the Vega 5 on March 14th and another 28 pirates on February 6th from the hijacked Prantaly 11 and yet another 14 this week.
