Al-Shabaab compels Bardera traders to pay money

The Al-Shabaab militia in Bardera district of Gedo region has compelled small scale traders in the area to pay Shs 200, 000 every month. Some of the local traders in the district told local mogadishu radio that they are worried of the Al-Shabaab’s brutal rules compelling them to pay an amount they could not afford amid the devastating drought in the region, saying that they are desperately suffering under the Al-Shabaab militia group in the area. The militia threatened to take decisive measures including imprisonment against defaulters.
Al-Shabaab’s brutal move to impose levy on already ailing small scale traders in the district comes as people in the area are fleeing into the neighboring countries in search of relief aid amid the escalated drought situation in Somalia.
