Rebels of the Al-Shabaab group in Somalia have taken over radio stations in some cities. In the areas under their control, the rebels have changed the nature of the broadcasting formats, to transmit their own propaganda. Al-Shabaab, which is aligned to al-Qaeda, has seized radio stations in the cities Kismayu and Bayhaba, and has arrested independent journalists. It has been reported the journalists have been severely mistreated by the rebels. There has been an increasing intimidation of journalists in Somalia since Al-Shabaab and other rebel groups took large parts of the country into their control. Somalia has not had a central government for 19 years and the current Western-backed government of Sheikh Sharif Ahmed has very little influence outside the capital, Mogadishu Big News Network.com
