At least two people have been killed and five others injured when two
explosions reportedly hit a market in Garbaharey town, the provincial
capital of Gedo region, Jubaland State of Somalia according to eyewitnesses.The explosions were
said to be remotely controlled landmines planted in the market killed
two prominent elders in Garbaharey. The injured people were rushed to
health facilities in the area.Ahlu Sunna spokesman in the region,
Mohamed Hussein Al-Qadi told Terror Free Somalia that they are conducting
investigations into the incident, promising that perpetrators of the
attack will be brought to justice.Al shabaab group has claimed responsibility of the explosion.Early
last month, Al-Shabaab militants made a surprise attack on Garbaharey
town, killing two senior military officers and wounded several other
people.The town is used by Ethiopian and Somali government-backed
troops as a base to launch assaults on Al-Shabaab militant group in the
region.The town has also a major presence of heavily armed
Ethiopian forces, which are supporting Somali government troops and a
pro-government militia group, Ahlu Sunna and has been under their
control for almost a year.
A high level delegation from Ahlu Sunna group on Sunday travelled to
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend a meeting on security situation in
recently liberated central Somalia regions.The 20 member
delegation includes senior officials from the central Somalia regions,
according to the group’s chairman, Prof, Xirsi Aw-Maxamad Hilowle .Ahlu Sunna militias backed by Ethiopian troops have been
conducting anti-Al-Shabaab offensive in these regions in order to clear
the militant group from these regions.The meeting in Addis Ababa
is expected to focus on securing these regions from remnant militant
fighters as well as setting up a local authority.
