ATHENS, Greece — Somali pirates released a Greek-owned tanker that was hijacked in September, a Greek government spokesman said Saturday.
The tanker MV Genius was released Friday with its cargo of refined oil intact and the crew of 19 safe, Merchant Marine Ministry spokesman Constantine Gialelis said. He said the ship's owners would not provide any information, including whether ransom was paid.
The 6,765 gross-ton vessel is on its way to the United Arab Emirates and is about 500 miles off Somalia, Gialelis said. The crew are Georgian, Sri Lankan and Syrian citizens, he added. more..http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,456427,00.html
Somali pirates vow to resist any rescue efforts
MOGADISHU (AFP) — Somali pirates holding an oil-laden Saudi super-tanker will fight back should any military intervention to free the ship be attempted, a member of the pirate group told AFP Saturday from the coastal village of Harardhere.
"I hope the owner of the tanker is wise enough and won't allow any military option because that would be disastrous for everybody. We are here to defend the tanker if attacked," Abdiyare Moalim said.
The pirates have been building up their defences around the captured Saudi Arabian vessel and have demanded a 25 million dollar ransom more..http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gYLXwdnzWMdSmhbTOS8UElJvhaQQ
Somali piracy starts affecting fuel pump prices in
Uganda
KAMPALA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Piracy off the coast of Somalia is partly to blame for the increasing pump prices in Uganda, a top government official said here on Saturday.
Kamander Bataringaya, minister of state for energy in charge of minerals told reporters that freight charges have gone up due to the increased risk of petroleum tankers being hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden.
He said the insurance premiums for the tankers have also gone up which has forced dealers to pass the cost pressures on to the consumers. more..http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-11/22/content_10396792.htm
Somali situation threatens regional economies
UN has a central role to play in all this. There is some diplomacy to be done to reassure those members of the Arab League who fear that piracy might be used as a pretext to base Western forces in the region more permanently.Just as it gave India the authority to enter Somali waters in pursuit of pirates, the UN should put in place tougher instruments to empower foreign forces to act. This should include the power to destroy pirate ships, apprehend, try and severely punish the pirates in any member state. Other measures ought to include serious sanctions against individuals who benefit from piracy.THE SECOND OPTION IS FOR SHIPPING companies, with the support of governments, to retain the services of private security companies to battle and eradicate the pirates at sea. Perhaps these private companies will succeed where navies have failed.Or the governments can support the regime in Mogadishu to take full charge of its territory and control piracy. But this regime is wobbly, and rebels, allegedly supported by Al Qaida elements, are only a few kilometres outside Mogadishu.Somalia has not had a stable, efficient government in 17 years; it is somewhat optimistic to hope it will have one in the short term. Besides, there is a lot of piracy in the so-called autonomous regions of the North. more..http://www.nation.co.ke/oped/Editorial/-/440804/493782/-/item/1/-/xmbx1uz/-/index.html
