April 14 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama vowed to work with the international community to curb piracy off the coast of Somalia, as U.S. defense officials said the problem couldn’t be tackled by the military alone.“We are resolved to halt the rise of piracy in that region,” Obama said yesterday, a day after U.S. snipers killed three Somali pirates and rescued American ship captain Richard Phillips. “We have to ensure that those who commit acts of piracy are held accountable for their crimes.”
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said there was “no purely military solution” to the issue, adding the problem would only worsen without a stable government in Somalia.
